Observations of everyday programming phenomena

Java Evolution

Monkeys evolved into apes that evolved into humans that created Java which evolved from a duke to a tiger, from a tiger to a mustang, and from a mustang to a dolphin.

Some time ago I downloaded a Java article from a website. I can’t remember exactly which one it was but I know it had something to do with the history of Java. I was doing some research about the evolution of Java at the time (as you do) and somehow stumbled across it. So I opened it up and started browsing its contents (hitting PgDn several times in succession) in search for that main paragraph of text containing the essential and all important information I was looking for. And soon enough I found it – a chapter titled ‘Java Evolution’.

But it was not the title of the chapter that first grabbed my attention. It was the image that appeared directly above the title. I saw the image first and the title second. I knew right there and then that I had found the information I was looking for. I took a closer look at the image and studied it. What I found was that it very clearly illustrated what I needed to know about the history and future direction of Java at that time. I felt no need to read the text. I just right clicked the image and saved it to my hard disk. And that was it! My research was done. Here is that image right here..

Java Evolution

Two years have passed and I thought things would have changed. But looking at Java today, it seems that nothing has changed. If this portrayal is correct, then Java is ultimately destined to become a dolphin.
